Men’s private label hair care is an overlooked DTC opportunity. Explore market gaps, top products and tips to launch with your OEM partner.

Most DTC beauty founders rush into crowded women’s shampoo, hair mask and hair oil categories. One high-potential but under-served segment is private label men’s hair care.

Modern male shoppers are no longer limited to basic 2-in-1 shampoo. They search for scalp serums, anti-thinning treatments, matte styling pastes, beard-hair combo products, sensitive scalp washes and fragrance-targeted hair lines. Yet many DTC brands still ignore this niche, leaving plenty of room for new brands to stand out with the right OEM partner.

If you’re building a DTC hair brand, men’s hair care offers lower competition, loyal repeat buyers and clear product positioning. This post breaks down market demand, hot-selling items, customer pain points and how to launch your private label men’s hair line.

  1. Lower market saturation: Women’s hair care is flooded by thousands of DTC brands. The men’s segment is far less crowded. You can carve a clear identity without fighting huge established competitors.
  2. Distinct, easy-to-target pain points: Male consumers have very specific needs: scalp oiliness, dandruff, early hair thinning, post-workout cleansing, short hair styling, beard & scalp irritation. These pain points make product messaging straightforward for TikTok, Instagram ads and your DTC site.
  3. High repeat purchase rate: Hair cleansers and scalp treatments are consumables. Once men find a formula they like, they reorder regularly — perfect for subscription models, which DTC brands love.
  4. Simplified branding direction: You can position your brand as minimalist, clean, gym-focused, premium grooming or budget everyday care. Formulas can be lightweight, low-fragrance, fragrance-free, or woody/earthy scents, easy to differentiate.

Work with your OEM to build a tight starter collection instead of overloading your catalog:

  • Men’s clarifying anti-dandruff shampoo
  • Oil-control scalp cleanser for oily scalp
  • Scalp serum for reducing hair breakage (cosmetic claim only)
  • Matte hair paste / styling clay
  • Leave-in scalp conditioner (lightweight, no greasiness)
  • Beard & hair 2-in-1 wash
  • Fragrance-free sensitive scalp shampoo

Important note: Avoid medical claims like “stop balding” or “cure hair loss”. Stick to cosmetic claims: reduce breakage, soothe scalp, control oil, add texture.

  • ✅ Clean, transparent ingredients: Men increasingly look for sulfate-free, paraben-free formulas
  • ✅ Minimal packaging: Simple, masculine, recyclable packaging performs well for DTC
  • ✅ Scalp-first grooming: More men focus on scalp health, not just clean hair
  • ✅ Multi-use products: 2-in-1, travel-sized grooming bundles are excellent for ad creatives
  • ✅ Unscented / light scent options: For sensitive skin and users who wear cologne
  • Copying women’s formulas and just changing the bottle label: Men’s scalp tends to produce more sebum; heavy moisturizing formulas often feel greasy.
  • Overusing strong synthetic fragrances: Many male buyers prefer subtle or unscented options.
  • Building too wide a lineup at launch: Start with 3–5 hero SKUs to test DTC ad response.
  • Ignoring compliance: If selling to EU / UK markets, prepare RP, CPNP and CPSR just like any cosmetic product.
  1. Confirm your positioning: Minimalist? Gym grooming? Premium scalp care?
  2. Pick hero SKUs and discuss formula adjustments with your OEM (lighter texture, oil-control actives etc.)
  3. Select scent profile: unscented, cedarwood, sandalwood, citrus or other masculine notes
  4. Sample testing: Test texture, rinse feel, scent and packaging
  5. Finalise packaging and label design
  6. Finish regional compliance documents (EU/UK/US)
  7. Create bundles and subscription offers for your DTC store
  8. Run short video ads focusing on scalp issues, before-after texture results

Men’s hair care is not a tiny side category anymore, but it remains far less competitive than mainstream women’s hair lines. For DTC founders, it is a fantastic niche to build a recognisable grooming brand, especially when you partner with an OEM that can customise lightweight, scalp-friendly private label formulas.
